Awakind is a Social Enterprise that donates 100% of all profits to to funding life changing projects helping less fortunate children. Providing more than a roof over their heads, these projects give kids a place to play, grow, sleep and dream.
UNICEF estimates there are approximately 100 million street children worldwide, with that number constantly growing. In Australia, children make up to 17% of the homeless population, equating to almost 20 thousand children not having a safe place to sleep on any given night. Whilst the causes for child homelessness differ vastly between countries, the impact it has on the child and their future are similar.
Children experiencing homelessness are especially vulnerable. They are often subject to abuse, neglect and exploitation. Children experiencing homelessness are more likely to experience mental health problems, physical disability, emotional and behavioural problems than housed children.
Whilst the problems of the world can often seem insurmountable, those who have come before us have shown this to be untrue. Together we can build a kinder and safer world for all kids.
We are passionate about raising the next generation and empowering them to build a better world. We recognise that the topic of child homelessness can also be sad and confronting for little ones. To help kids understand the positive impact they can have, we’ve created the Awakind Podcast. This podcast features a series of stories sharing the real people, places and children whose lives have been touched by our mission. They are uplifting, inspiring, soothing and completely age appropriate. To listen scan the QR code on your kids PJs or click on the button below.
The issue of youth homelessness is complex and difficult to solve and we do not claim to be the experts. As passionate advocates for children, we look to support those specialists in the field who are working at the forefront of change. Most importantly, we are focused on ensuring our collective contribution will have the biggest impact. That’s why we have chosen partners who provide care at the very fringes of poverty- affected communities.
We are proud to be an official Champion of Children with UNICEF. UNICEF are an amazing organisation whose mission to support the rights and wellbeing of every child, is completely aligned to our mission. Together we will be focused on Child Protection, aimed at preventing unnecessary family-child separation and protecting children deprived of parental care.
Through our partnership with Chop Vietnam, we are currently supporting two children’s homes; The Thien Phonc Centre which provides shelter and care for 77 children from families unable to cope with their child’s disability, and the Mai Hoa Centre which provides shelter, food, free basic medical care and an orphanage for those abandoned by their families due to their HIV status.
